We are all very fortunate in so many ways, but how often do we really think and consider how blessed we are?
As part of our Yoga Retreat last year year we presented a workshop on Grace, Gratefulness/ Gratitude and how this can have positive benefits and flow on affects to enable us to enjoy an uplifting and fulfilled, happy life.
In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.
Brother David Steindl-Rast
In preparation for the workshop and prior to attending the retreat we asked everyone to consider what things in life they are Grateful for. Perhaps you would like to take the exercise too.
Acknowledging how grateful we are for all kind of things in our lives provides us with opportunities to reflect in a positive way about our lives. For example, as yogis, we know what positive life force is all about and the benefits this can bring into our lives. Another everyday example is being grateful for our homes..
My house warms my body and shelters and protects me. It gives me a sense of relief knowing that there is always a comforting place to come back to.
There are many benefits to having a regular gratitude practice:
1. Gratitude allows us to celebrate the present.
2. Gratitude magnifies positive emotions. Research shows that happiness and gratitude go hand in hand.
3. Gratitude blocks, negative emotions.
4. Grateful people are more stress resistant.
5. Grateful people have a higher sense of self-worth.
Over the next few days you might like to notice what makes you grateful and jot down some notes.
To assist you in this exercise answer the following questions: (there is no right or wrong answer)
Q. How grateful are you for the mess in your children’s bedrooms, your own office or the dirty dishes left in the sink?
Q. How can you be grateful for these points that could make you feel negative and ungrateful?
Q. What tangible things in your life are you grateful for and how do they make you feel?
Q. List alternate words to Gratefulness that have the same meaning.
Can you think of other questions you may ask yourself? Keep a list, start your gratitude journal today.
My entry today reads like this….’It’s a great sunny day today, I am grateful for that warming sun on this cold morning’.
